    How to Apply for Study Permit

    If you’re an international student planning to study at Western Community College, obtaining a Study Permit is a crucial step. Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure your application is successful:

    Step 1: Verify Your Eligibility

    To be eligible for a Study Permit, you must:

    • Have an acceptance letter from WCC (Designated Learning Institution).
    • Prove you can financially support yourself and any accompanying family members. This includes tuition fees, living expenses, and return travel costs.
    • Be law-abiding and have no criminal record (a police certificate may be required).
    • Be in good health (you may need to undergo a medical examination).

    Step 2: Gather Required Documents

    Prepare the following:

    • Letter of Acceptance from WCC.
    • Proof of Financial Support, such as bank statements or a letter of sponsorship.
    • A valid passport or travel document.
    • Two passport-sized photos meeting Canadian visa standards.
    • Completed IMM 1294 form (Application for Study Permit Made Outside of Canada).
    • Letter of Explanation explaining why you want to study in Canada.
    • Police clearance certificate (if required).
    • Medical exam results (if applicable).

    Step 3: Apply for Your Study Permit

    You can apply:

    1. Online: This method is faster and allows you to track your application status.
    2. Paper-Based Application: Available for certain countries but may take longer.

    Step 4: Pay the Application Fee

    The current fee is CAD 150. Biometric fees may apply (CAD 85 per person). Ensure you retain the receipt for your records.

    Step 5: Provide Biometrics

    If required, schedule an appointment to provide your fingerprints and photograph.

    Step 6: Wait for a Decision

    If approved, you’ll receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction and, if applicable, a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).

    How to Renew Your Study Permit

    If your study permit is about to expire, you need to renew it to continue studying in Canada.

    Step 1: Apply Before Expiry

    • Apply at least 30 days before your permit expires.
    • You’ll maintain your legal status while waiting for a decision.

    Step 2: Gather Required Documents

    • Proof of Enrollment: A letter from WCC confirming your enrollment.
    • Proof of Financial Support: Updated bank statements or letters from sponsors.
    • Passport: Ensure it remains valid for the duration of your requested extension.

    Step 3: Submit Your Renewal Application

    • Complete the renewal application through the IRCC portal.
    • Pay the application fee of CAD 150.

      Starting November 8, 2024, you must be enrolled in the designated learning institution (DLI) named on your study permit. This means you can no longer change DLIs by letting IRCC know through your online account. To change DLIs, you need to get a new study permit by applying to extend your current one.
