A live-in caregiver or a ‘Nanny’ is someone who dedicates their career to a private family by providing care to one or more children while residing in their home. It is a career choice that may be temporary or permanent, offering the opportunity to earn a steady income while becoming an integral part of, and often gaining the love of a family. Caregiving is a very personal and rewarding career in which you can learn and evolve by working closely with children during an important stage in their upbringing.

Canada is a country that is progressive in its family dynamics, and the ‘stay at home parent’ tradition is one that is less prominent now amongst families with young children. It is also an increasingly expensive country with a high cost of living where more than one income is often required to live comfortably. Whether it’s due to a demanding career, a heavy workload or a challenging household, extra help is often needed, and therefore the demand for live-in caregivers in Canada is growing.

While this career choice is a popular one in Canada with an attractive and accessible job market, it does not come without gaining the relative qualification required to legally practice as a Nanny. Working with children is sensitive due to the nature of the work involved and the health and safety issues that come with it and so those wishing to perform this work must be appropriately trained and fully equipped to do so.

The Live-in Caregiver program at Western Community College offers a full time training program that prepares students to work for a Canadian family as a Nanny. Over the course of six months, students will gain all the skills they need to pursue this rewarding and in-demand career, such as knowledge of Canadian culture, interpersonal communication skills and guiding young children’s behavior. Completion of this comprehension course will allow students to legally and safely practice as a Nanny anywhere in Canada, and the knowledge and expertise gained will ensure they do so at a high standard that will reflect favourably on them in the job market.

To join a growing network of Nanny’s throughout Canada and become a caring and valuable support system on which a family in need can rely, visit our website and check out our Live-in Caregiver course today.
