Western Community College Meets with ICBC to Explore Workforce Development and Community Safety Partnerships

At Western Community College, we believe that building safer, more resilient communities starts with meaningful collaboration — and that collaboration is most powerful when education, industry, and public institutions come together around a shared vision.

That’s why we were pleased to sit down recently with Jason McDaniel, CEO of ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia), and his team to explore exciting opportunities for partnership in workforce development, education, and community safety.

Why This Partnership Matters

British Columbia is growing — and with that growth comes an increasing demand for skilled, safety-conscious professionals who are ready to contribute from day one. ICBC plays a critical role in the province’s road safety ecosystem, and Western Community College is committed to producing graduates who are not only professionally prepared but also deeply invested in the communities they serve.

Bringing together a forward-thinking public organization like ICBC and a college dedicated to practical, career-focused education creates a powerful foundation. Together, we can help shape programs and pathways that respond directly to the evolving needs of British Columbia’s workforce.

Areas of Collaboration

Our discussions touched on several promising areas where WCC and ICBC could work hand in hand:

Workforce Development — Identifying skill gaps and co-developing curriculum that prepares students for roles within the insurance, public safety, and transportation sectors. Partnerships with industry leaders like ICBC ensure our graduates are trained on the competencies employers actually need.

Experiential Learning Opportunities — Creating meaningful internship, co-op, and mentorship opportunities for WCC students, giving them real-world exposure to how a large public organization like ICBC operates and serves British Columbians.

Community Safety Education — Exploring how WCC’s programs can support and amplify ICBC’s broader road safety mandate, whether through curriculum, community outreach initiatives, or joint awareness campaigns.

Career Pathways — Helping students — especially those from underrepresented and newcomer communities — discover and access careers in the public sector and insurance industry, building long-term economic opportunity across the province.

Building a Better BC Together

The strength of any community lies in the strength of its partnerships. When colleges, industry leaders, and public organizations work in alignment, we multiply our collective impact. Students gain better opportunities. Communities become safer. And British Columbia becomes a place where more people can thrive.

Western Community College is proud to be at the table for these conversations, and we are energized by the possibilities ahead. We look forward to continuing this dialogue with Jason McDaniel and the ICBC team, and to translating these conversations into real, lasting outcomes for our students and the communities we serve.
