Orientation and Support 

Pre-Arrival Orientation

  • Checklist: Visa, Health Insurance, and Housing
    Western Community College ensures students are fully prepared before arriving in Canada. We provide a comprehensive checklist covering essential tasks such as applying for a study permit through IRCC, enrolling in BC’s Medical Services Plan (MSP) or obtaining private health insurance for initial coverage, and securing or off-campus housing. Our international student advisors offer personalized guidance to make this process seamless. 
  • Virtual Campus Tours and Online Webinars
    WCC hosts interactive virtual campus tours to familiarize students with their future learning environment. Online webinars provide valuable information about academics, campus life, and cultural adaptation. These sessions also include live Q&A opportunities with faculty, staff, and current students, ensuring all concerns are addressed before departure. 

Post-Arrival Orientation

Housing and Accommodation

At Western Community College, our Student Services team is dedicated to ensuring a smooth and stress-free transition for international students. We understand that finding suitable housing in a new country can be challenging, so we provide comprehensive support to help you secure a comfortable and safe place to live.

On-Campus Housing

Western Community College is currently building on-campus housing for 945 students in collaboration with Lark Group and ICT Group. Estimated to come 2028.

  • Modern Dormitory Facilities: Students will enjoy fully furnished dormitories with amenities such as high-speed internet, laundry facilities, and common areas for studying and socializing.
  • Affordable Payments: Flexible and transparent payment options will  be available to accommodate student budgets, ensuring financial ease during your stay on campus.
  • Safety and Security: On-campus accommodations will be equipped with 24/7 security measures to ensure a safe living environment.

Off-Campus Housing

For students seeking housing off-campus, WCC offers comprehensive support to help secure a suitable living arrangement. WCC proudly assists local and international students with accommodation needs through Vanmates: Modern Co-Living spaces for students and young professionals (Vanmates Intake Form) ; and Sparrow: Affordable and secure room rentals across Canada.

Tenancy Rights in British Columbia

As an international student in British Columbia, it is essential to understand your tenancy rights to ensure a safe and fair housing experience. The Residential Tenancy Act (RTA) in BC protects the rights of tenants and landlords, ensuring mutual respect and compliance. Here’s what you need to know: 

 Resources for International Students 

  • Residential Tenancy Branch (RTB): The RTB resolves disputes between tenants and landlords and provides guidance on tenancy rights. Visit the Residential Tenancy Branch website for more information. 
  • Tenant Support Services: Local organizations, such as the Tenant Resource & Advisory Centre (TRAC), offer free legal advice and resources for tenants in BC. 

Right to a Safe and Habitable Home

    • Landlords must provide a rental property that is clean, safe, and meets health standards.
    • Repairs and maintenance are the landlord’s responsibility unless caused by tenant negligence.

Right to Privacy

    • Landlords must provide 24 hours’ written notice before entering your unit, except in emergencies.
    • Tenants have the right to enjoy their rented space without unnecessary disturbances.

Right to a Tenancy Agreement

    • All tenancies must have a written or verbal agreement outlining the terms, such as rent amount, payment schedule, and rules for the property.
    • Ensure you receive a copy of your agreement for reference

Right to Fair Rent

    • Landlords can only increase rent once per year and must provide at least three months’ written notice.
    • Rent increases must comply with the annual allowable limit set by the government.

Tenant's Responsibilities

  • Paying Rent on Time: Rent must be paid in full by the agreed-upon date.
  • Maintaining the Property: Tenants must keep the property clean and report damages to the landlord.
  • Following the Agreement: Abide by the terms in the tenancy agreement, including rules about pets, smoking, and noise.

Health Insurance

    • BC’s Medical Services Plan (MSP): All International students studying in British Columbia for more than six months are required to enroll in MSP. WCC helps students apply for this essential coverage upon arrival. 
    • Private Health Insurance: For initial coverage before MSP activation, WCC guides students in selecting and purchasing private health insurance plans tailored to their needs. 
    • Comprehensive Coverage: Both MSP and private insurance cover routine medical check-ups, emergency care, and hospital visits.

Mental Health and Wellness

WCC prioritizes the mental well-being of students with accessible and confidential support services. 

    • Students have access to the Here2Talk program, ensuring that counseling services are readily available to promote a healthy and supportive learning environment. 
    • Workshops and Wellness Activities: Regular sessions on stress management, mindfulness, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance are organized to promote mental health. 
    • Simply Counselling Personalized Support for Your Unique Needs: Simply Counselling provides personalized support to help you overcome personal and academic challenges. Our professional counselors offer one-on-one sessions that focus on your individual needs, helping you develop coping strategies, build resilience, and enhance your overall well-being. 

Emergency Contacts

    • Local Emergency Numbers: WCC provides all international students with information on how to reach police, fire, and ambulance services in emergencies (dial 911 in Canada). 
    • On-Campus Security: The campus security team is available 7 days a week to assist students with safety concerns or emergencies.

Addictions and Overdose


At Western Community College, we understand the challenges that international students may face when adjusting to a new environment, culture, and academic life. Your well-being is our priority, and we offer a range of support services to ensure you have the resources you need to thrive. 

Naloxone Kits for Opioid Overdose Prevention 

  • Naloxone kits are available at all WCC campuses to address opioid-related emergencies. 
  • Students can request a kit discreetly at the front desk, where trained staff can also provide instructions on how to use it. 

Health and Safety Officer Support 

  • Students can directly contact the Health and Safety Officer or the Student Services Department for assistance with addiction concerns or opioid-related issues. 
  • These professionals provide personalized support and connect students to local resources for recovery and crisis management. 

Community Referrals 

  • For students requiring specialized care, we provide referrals to trusted local organizations, addiction recovery centers, and healthcare providers. 

 

Employment and Career Development

Employment Services

WCC prepares students for successful careers with tailored career development resources. 

    • Resume and Interview Preparation: Personalized workshops help students create standout resumes and hone their interview skills. 
    • Networking Events: Opportunities to connect with industry professionals and alumni during career fairs and guest lectures. 
    • Job Placement Assistance: Advisors work closely with students to secure part-time or full-time employment opportunities that align with their career goals. 

Work During Studies

    • Off-Campus Work: Eligible students can work up to 20 hours per week during academic terms and full-time during scheduled breaks, as per Canadian work regulations. WCC conducts annual job fairs to ensure our students find work during with studies in Canada. Link To annual job fair photos 
    • Co-op and Internships: Some programs include hands-on co-op placements, allowing students to gain valuable work experience in their fields of study.

WCC has a Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) in managing incidents such as natural disasters, health emergencies, cybersecurity threats, and more.
